I wiped my tears as I answered her call, pretending to be happy, I was able to switch mode as I heard her voice and then she said,
"I'll be coming home this Christmas, Probably on the 24th"
"Ooh! That would be great baby! Can't wait to pick you at the airport", I lied.
As the call dropped I looked into the sky confused as to what next to do, passersby all stared at me as I was straddled on the ground with my body covered in dust, I stood and then greet a heavily pregnant woman who stared at me the most with her protruding stomach which seemed like she had hidden something under those 'buba' she had on, she nodded her head in response to my greeting and then muttered few words,
"All these blood money people dem no go rest for this Eko".
That I could clearly hear as she walked past me, it dawned on me that I was acting all weird and if I don't leave soonest the crazy frustrated youths of this Lagos who are angered by the poverty that has embraced all of us would pounce on me, pummeling to pulp as they would level an allegation against me, I was quick with my steps as I walked out of that street.
"I no trust this man my guy! First class na jew man, abi una dey see am as person wey fit hold machine",
One of Alhaji's cronies named Small, nature dealt a heavy blow on him, stealing every quality of grown man from him, as he was smallish in stature, no beards and very feminine voice that made him look like he was fourteen years of age, Small had this passionate hatred for me and the four walls of an institution of learning, most times he would point at well dressed people in suit and tie saying,
"See dis mumu oh! For dia mind dem better pass us, if I enter Oshodi now I go buy that cloth",
That was his view about highly educated people, so that was where his hatred for me was stemming from. I had convinced Alhaji to recruit me into his group since I could not go home to my wailing mother whose tears and my conscience were like gravitational force pulling me down on my knees, so I thought to myself that it was better I joined them to raise money that I would use to welcome my darling Tina.
"Shatap! You no know sey First class go school so him go sabi many things pass us, na big boy o! If no be dis government wey no send us", Alhaji said.
I felt this leap of joy in my heart, if the leader of the gang was in favor of me, nobody could disapprove of me, Small frowned his face as he picked a pistol from the numerous assaulted rifles that was on the ground that we had encircled, handing it over to me as he asked,
"Oya First class athink you go school?, oya show me where trigger dey for here".
I smiled as he handed the heavy metal to me, that was the first time I was coming in contact with a gun, but this was no time to show that I was a novice as I carried the pistol and then pointed at the trigger, looking at Alhaji as his face brightened up, and then the mistake happened!, as I tried to drop the pistol back on the floor where it was before, I didn't know that the pistol was loaded and corked, I squeezed the trigger and then the gun fired, as the bullet went straight to Small, shooting his left arm and in fear because of the loud bang that came out of the gun, every other member of the gang took their heels including Alhaji who was caught unawares, with only Small and I in the uncompleted building as he wriggled in pain and was bleeding profusely as he kept screaming,
"I don die! Yekpa!!!"
Minutes later, the rest of the gang members began to come one by one as they tiptoed into the scene. Immediately Alhaji commanded the rest as they helped in carrying Small to the nearest hospital as nobody could believe the turnout of events.
Small had continued with his long unparalleled hatred for me as he was vexed by my actions, my instincts like a guardian kept telling me that Small would retaliate somehow but that uncertainty was what scared me the most, as we parlayed and drank together, though he did that with some resentments as he could not hide it even as Alhaji had called us to a round table and then settle every grievances he had against me for I was a new comer and I had not even have any robbery experience with them.
Empty bottles littered all over the table, as the other members puffed marijuana from their burnt dark nicotine laddened lips, prostitutes at the brothel caressing the chest of every member of our five man gang, flapping their ass to the rhythm of the music from the speakers. From the entrance I noticed a young lad in his teen ages, too young to be seen in places like this; "the cooking pot of devils disciples", the prostitutes that thronged the brothel began to scream his name as he smiled revealing the gap in his gum, two teeth were missing which I guessed immediately must have been knocked out during a brawl. He held his trouser by the hand as he had no belt on, he walked straight to where we were and lay flat on the ground by the side of Alhaji who smiled the moment the boy did that, he gulped his beer and then stretched his hand to touch the boy on his head and then looked at me saying,
"First Class! You see dis Engine? Dis small boy them dey call Engine, him go first plenty of him mate join dis our work, infact one day him go lead zanga like me"
The young lad smiled sheepishly as he stood off scratching his over grown hair and then put both hands back as he spoke in a rather awkward voice tone,
"Baba! I bring racket come for you o! That school wey dey after bridge, my informant don give the confirm info when them go carry teachers money come give them for school dia"
Alhaji began to clap as he smiled and then turned to me and said,
"First Class you see why I yarn you say this guy go travel pass me for dis business?"
And I replied,
"Yes! He seem to have prospect"
And Small jumped in pointing his finger at me saying,
"Oloshi! Prospect ko! Prospect ni! You think say na school we dey abi?".
I didn't bother to respond to his ranting for I know he still had that anger bottled inside him and also jealous that I was Alhaji's new confidant, Alhaji made a hand gesture to Engine who then came closer and whispered some words into his ears, Alhaji kept nodding and smiling all through and then finally he dipped his hand into his pocket and brought out old rumpled notes of two hundred naira denomination and then counted aloud,
"One Two ... Five!, take this money take carry ashawo, in fact wait make I call Temitope make she come carry inside her room do you well"
Temitope seemed to have been eaves dropping because the moment her name was mentioned she appeared out of the blue, spotting a bra and bum short, revealing her over bleached skin that had stretch marks all over her thigh like she had been stricken by thunder in the past. She held Engine by the hand as she led him to her room.
"We get better job tomorrow! Better 1.5 million naira go enter that school tomorrow, we suppose go burst am collect the money".
Immediately, other members of the gang began to make animal sound as they were joyous at the announcement and then he continued,
"Make una prepare o! I no wan hear say me Alhaji no confirm that money for my hand".
...to be continued.
