STORY: THE DEATH PLOT - EPISODE TWO (BY TEE SILVA)

A week later, Jake sat behind his desk in his office and studied the photograph of the death scene of Professor Smart. His intercom buzzed and he picked.
Jake - " Yes?"
Secretary - "Mr. Raymond smart is here to see you sir"
Jake - "Show him in please"

The door to his office opened and a dark-skinned man walked in.
“Mr. Ray, you are welcome”, Jake said.
Ray - “Mr. Jake. Am I right?”
Jake - “Yes you are. I am the new DCO of this area”
Ray - “Okay”
Jake - “Hope you didn’t mind that I invited you over?”
Ray - “Not at all”
Jake - “I’m sorry about the loss of your father, my deepest condolences”
Ray - “Thank you”

Jake - “I wont take much of your time. As you know that I'm the one in charge of the investigation of your father’s death, I need your help in some areas. I understand that you are the first and only son of your late father with your other siblings being female. Is that right?”
Ray - “Yes, that’s right”
Jake - “Good. I’ll like to know how close you were to the deceased. How was your father-son relationship?”
Ray - “I and dad were quite close. He tells me virtually everything”
Jake - “That means you know his friends and of course his enemies. I’ll need you to give me a compiled list of his closest friends and farthest enemies. I’ll be needing that for the investigation”
Ray - “That won't be a problem. I’ll have it sent to your mail by tomorrow”
Jake - “Alright, and also include family members as well please”
Ray - “Is that all?”
Jake -“Yes, that will be all for now. If I need more of your help I’ll let you know. Thank you.”
Ray - “Then I’ll go ahead now”
Jake - “Thank you for your time. I’ll show you to the door”

Jake stood up and accompanied Ray out of his office to his car. On his way back to his office, he asked his secretary to call Bryan.

Jake - “Bryan, I need you to track Ray. Follow him everywhere he goes”.
Bryan - “Ok sir. But why sir? He's the son of the deceased sir.”
Jake - “Yeah, exactly. He looks too cool for someone who just lost his father. Throughout his stay in my office, he didn’t say a word about catching the criminal who killed his father. He only said 'Okay' and 'thank you'."
Bryan - “Hmmmm. But I don’t think there is a need to be suspicious of him. What does he have to gain by killing his father?”
Jake - “Well, we’ll know if you track him well enough”
Bryan - “Okay sir. I’ll prepare my boys”
“Good!”, Jake said and Bryan went out of his office.

Jake brought out his ipad and did some background check on Professor Smart. He found out that not only was he a successful Professor but he was also a successful business man who invested in oil plantation. His father had passed an oil plant to him which has been a family property. His father died shortly after he gave birth to Ray. Smart had studied abroad and came back to Nigeria to take up lecturing in medicine, after which he got married to his wife Margaret. He gave birth to a son and two daughters. Raymond being the first born while Amanda and Avirah are his sisters. Since the oil plantation was a family property the best person he could possibly pass it on to would be Raymond.

“Raymond” Jake said aloud. He typed Raymond Smart into his ipad and several search results came out.
Raymond Smart graduating with honors;
Raymond Smart back home with parents;
Raymond Smart in Ijebu land to visit family’s oil plantation;
Raymond Smart looking hot at AMAA awards 2013;
Raymond Smart caught on camera kissing a girl.

“What!?” Jake zoomed the picture. “JANICE!!” Raymond Smart was kissing Janice, Jake’s girlfriend. He took a close look at the picture and checked the date the article was written, it was six months ago. In some weeks time, Jake and Janice's relationship will be a year old.

If Janice were in a relationship with him, why kiss Raymond? Is she playing games with him or with Raymond? Did she know that Prof. Smart was Ray’s father? Is that why she came to Jake’s house on the night of the incident? Did she find out about Smart’s death through Raymond? If that is so, why would she come to Jake’s house instead of going to console Raymond?

“I think I’m going crazy”, Jake said to himself. He took his car keys, wore his suit and strolled out of his office.
