"See Engine! E be like say him don dey go confirm with our informant", Small said.
Our car was parked exactly opposite the school, pretending we had a flat tire as I and Alhaji came out of the car while Small was sitting on the drivers seat. I had the premonition that something wasn't going to go right but with the tales of how successful all their previous robberies were. I had to give my conscious mind a bench of doubt to sit on for Tina's welfare when she comes back to Nigeria was superior. I watched as Engine came out of the school gate, smiling as he arranged his shirt and then walked to a shop beside the school where drinks and snacks were sold and sat down. Alhaji gave me a pat on the shoulder as he smiled and then said,
"I trust this boy pass my mama!, you no see say him don give me signal say make we dey enter".
I felt this cringe in my stomach immediately as fear engulfed me, rubbing my sweaty palm on my jean as Small brought his head from the window with his unkempt hair giving him the look of a beggar, he spoke in his tiny feminine voice,
"Make una go collect dis money come make person comot from here na".
He spoke with so much confidence like the money was his and that he was ordering us to go get it. Alhaji stared at him for a moment without saying a word and then without thinking he crossed the road in a swift action caring less if a car was on high speed, still undecided on my next line of action to follow when Small brought out his ugly looking head and yelled at me in a low tone,
"First class! If you no cross this road now follow Alhaji, I go show you why dem dey call me Small".
And that was when I decided to cross the road and join Alhaji who was far ahead of me, I could still hear Small ranting and bleating like a goat,
"Oloshi! You think say dis one na classroom, come carry first class make we see..."
Slowly like the sound of a drum from a distance his voice faded away into thin air, I increased my steps walking faster so as to catch up with Alhaji who had already pushed the school gate open before I got there, but as I got closer I heard Alhaji's voice, he was discussing with someone so I pushed the gate open in a hurry and saw Alhaji talking to a tall lanky guy who wore a uniform like that of the prison warders, an ash trouser and shirt sewn in military form, he had sandals on as his feet came out of the sandals, a sign that he had worn those sandals for years and has outgrown it but no money to get a new one. He smiled at Alhaji as he pointed towards a bungalow that was painted white and had flowers around saying,
"Na the office be that, just the first office as you reach there, the owner na one woman wey wear big oyinbo eye glass".
Alhaji shook hands with him and then began to walk majestically towards the direction, as I walked past the security man, he was quick as he smiled at me and then muttered,
"Make una no forget me o".
It was then it dawned on me that the security man was Engine's informant, a total contrast to what I had expected that the same person employed to safeguard the school is the one masterminding the robbery. Before I could get to the office, I saw Alhaji running towards me with a huge bag on his left hand and a pistol on the right hand, immediately I turned and then began to walk back to the gate when I heard a woman's voice screaming,
"Thief o! Thief o! Security Thief o!".
I was the first to come out of the school gate only for me to see Engine running towards our car as he crossed the road without looking and a car on high speed knocked him down, first flinging him to the high heavens before landing on the bonnet of the car as I noticed blood on his shirt but couldn't detect the exact place he was bleeding from. With speed, Alhaji ran past me without looking out for an oncoming vehicle, people had begun to gather at the accident scene as I looked carefully before crossing the road, behind me I could hear same voice that was raising alarm inside the school premises shouting,
"Catch him for me! That guys is a thief".
I increased my pace as I ran towards the car, Alhaji got to the car before me, opened the door and dived inside as Small looked at me running toward them and spat out of the window and said,
"You don die today!".
I felt my world crash, the whirlwind of failure encircled me like a hurricane, spinning and whispering tales of sorrow to my ears, I could hear the footsteps of the crowd running and shouting,
"Ole! Ole! Ole!"
I watched the car as it sped off and then turned facing the crowd with my mind made to accept the death sentence that would be melted out on me by these street urchins who are more of a criminal than me. I guess they derive joy in killing another criminal so that it would be only them existing and no competition would pop up from anywhere.
First was this big blow to my head that sent me straight to the ground and I felt dizzy as I used my hand to press against my eyes and then the crowd that had gathered began to hit various objects on my back, in pain I removed my hand from my eyes but vision was blurry, all I could hear was,
"Bring tyre, Who get fuel o?"
My life was fizzing away before my very eyes as vision became better that was when they hung this large tyre over my neck and then began to pour fuel all over my body. I began to beg for that was the only commodity I could sell for freedom,
"I no follow oh! Am a respected citizen of this country".
From nowhere someone gave me a hot slap shouting,
"Shatap! See your mouth like respected".
The next that followed was not imagined as I heard someone say,
"He is not among! Stop he is not among the thieves".
It was the same voice that was screaming inside the school premises, that was when they stopped and then began to apologize to me, a man from the crowd pushed me by the head and said,
"You be real mumu! So you no follow and you no dey talk, e be like say you wan die like fowl".
The woman helped in raising me up as others helped in carrying me into the school premises and the woman's office who turned out to be the owner of the school.
Walking back to our hideout that evening, as I passed the street that leads to the uncompleted building, everybody I passed kept starring at me like they had seen a ghost while others in groups whispered to themselves as I walked past them, not until I had walked past a kid I was teaching lesson during holidays that he greeted me and held unto my hand not letting me go further and then I inquired,
"Why are you holding my hands boy?"
He scratched his head and then looked in both direction and then buried his head on the ground and said,
"Broda! Those people you dey follow these days, Police come with that boy dem dey call Engine come arrest everybody including Oga Alhaji, people even say dem shoot Small for leg wen him be wan escape, as I dey talk to you police round the place".
My heart almost jumped out of my body, without thinking I turned immediately and then began to walk out of the street and then boarded a cab that was going to a direction I didn't bother to ask so far as I was leaving that vicinity.
