STORY: THE DEATH PLOT - EPISODE SEVEN (BY TEE SILVA)

Freda sat in her living room watching a foreign movie when her phone rang, it was Jake.

Freda - “Hello Mr. Jake”

Jake - “Hello miss Freda”

Freda - “Just Freda would do”

Jake - “Then you have to call me Jake”

Freda - “Okay Jake, to what do I owe this pleasure of your call?”

Jake - “I called to see if I can book a lunch appointment with you tomorrow, I hope your schedule isn’t too tight?”

Freda -  “Not at all. I think I'm free for lunch tomorrow”

Jake - “Wow!… that’s nice. Where would you like to go?”

Freda - “Anywhere would do”

Jake - “Then you are up for a pleasant surprise. What time should I pick you up?”

Freda - “Is 1pm good?”

Jake - “Perfect. I’ll pick you up in your office by 1pm”

Freda - “Alright”

Jake - “Have a good night sleep”

“You too”, Freda said as she hung up the call.

At lunch the next day, Jake had taken his time to dress up and arrived at Freda’s office just in time for lunch. He drove them to a restaurant he had discovered along the way to his office.

Jake - “What would you like to eat? Their chicken here is good’

Freda - “Then I’ll have chicken”.

They both placed their orders and while they wait, Jake started a conversation that has been on his mind ever since he met Freda.

Jake - “Freda, can I ask you a question?”

Freda - “Yes, go ahead”

Jake - “What do you think of policemen?”

Freda - “Policemen? In general?”

Jake - “Yes, in general”

Freda - “Well, I’ve never thought of them so I don’t really know what I think about them. I’ve never been close to them, the only reason I’ve been in the police station was my father’s death and also last week when you called me over”.

Jake - “Hmm. So what if there is a chance to get close to a policeman, would you?”

Freda - “I really can’t say”

Jake - “So what about me? Can you get close to me?

Freda - *smiles* “Why not? As far as you won’t investigate me”

Jake - “Why? Are you scared of me investigating you? What do you think I’ll find?”

Freda - “Nothing of a crime sort”.

They both bursted into laughter and when lunch was over, Jake drove her back to her office and he returned to his office. On getting to his office, Bryan was waiting for him with his report on the investigation on Freda. Jake read through the report and found nothing incriminating, just as she has said. Jake felt a kind of relief when he found nothing incriminating Freda. 

Why is he feeling this relief? What is wrong? He pushed away his thoughts on Freda and concentrated on his work.

Weeks later, Jake received a call from Freda asking him to meet her. They agreed on a meeting place and he went.

Jake - “What’s the emergency Freda?”

Freda - “I found this and I think you need to see it too”, she handed a CD over to Jake.

Jake - “A CD? What’s inside?”

Freda - “You should watch it. Are you here with your laptop?”

“Yes”, Jake said as he took the CD and played it on his laptop. He saw Prof. Smart and Senator Davies in a hot argument about the marriage between their children, suddenly someone entered - it was Janice. She threatened both of them. 

“After you both have slept with me, used me to your content when you knew I was dating your son, now you both want to set up a marriage between your children. It can never happen. I will kill you both before you ever got the chance to do it. I am going to marry Raymond and there is nothing both of you can do about it”, Janice said and stormed out of the room while the CD came to an end.

“How did you get this?”, Jake asked looking so shocked.

Freda - “I was going through my father’s library and I saw it. It was in this wrapper”, she handed a package to Jake.

“From Diamond Hotel and Suites through DHL express” Jake read aloud.

Jake - “Where is this hotel?”

Freda - “It’s a hotel my father likes to hangout on weekends. I think they must have sent this to my father after reviewing it on their CCTV. One more thing Jake, my father mentioned to me on the morning of the day he died”

Jake - “What?”

Freda - “He said he would just meet with his lawyer and withdraw all his investment in the Smith’s farm and that I should also forget about marrying Ray because he doesn’t want to die. I asked him what he meant but he didn’t say and he never came back”, Freda was crying already.

Jake - “Common beauty, don’t cry. Please. This CD will do a great deal. At least we will be able to arrest Janice. Though it doesn’t convict her as the murderer because what she said might have been an empty threat, but it can give us a lead as to whom the murderer is.

Freda - “I know and I also have an assurance it will lead us to the truth, both of who killed my father and who killed Prof. Smart”

Jake - “Yes. You should go home now. I’ll start working on this, let me drop you at home”

By the time Jake dropped Freda at her house, it was too late for him to go to his office so he invited Bryan to his house.

“We must issue an arrest warrant of miss Janice Richardson immediately”, Jake said to Bryan as soon as he entered his study.

Bryan - “What? How do you mean sir? How can we just arrest her like that? We’ve got no evidence incriminating her”

Jake - “I don’t think you’ll still say that after watching this CD”, he handed the CD over to Bryan and his mouth was wide opened all through the play.

Bryan - “This is enough to send her to jail for the rest of her life”

Jake - “Oh Bryan, don’t be dumb. With a good lawyer she can escape that. It can be said to be just empty threats”

Bryan - “You are right sir, and it could be an empty threat actually”

Jake - “My instincts doesn’t say so”

Bryan - “Is it the same instinct that asked me to investigate Miss Freda?”

They both bursted into laughter.
